The Gertrudenhof (Geistersterz) belonged since 1859 to the circus director Oscar Carré and was a variety show. It burned down in 1878. Carré, however, had a permanent circus build in its place in 1878 under the name “Circus Carré”. In 1886 he created the “Reichshallen and Operetten Theater” at Gertudenstrasse 10. It was the third largest theater in Cologne after the opera house and Schauspielhaus. The Circus Building and now Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam was constructed in a rather similar way by Oscar Carré.
