Circus Travados

“Foundation for the future” was the headline of this newspaper in May ten years ago. At that time the floor slab for the permanent construction of the Circus ’Travados in the spa gardens had just been completed. And finally the cornerstone role was laid.

The construction on a meadow in the spa park was not without controversy. When the plans became known that the circus would like to move into a permanent building, the opponents formed up immediately. They feared the park’s charm and character. A permanent construction would even destroy the spa gardens, they argued.

An architectural competition in 1999 provided the basis for the concrete planning of the circus building. The funding application will be submitted in time for the millennium. For the last time the circus is playing in its tent “From time to time”. The Travados circus building was created as part of the “International Building Exhibition Emscher Park”. It was designed by Professor Peter Huebner.
In 2000 the euphoria gave way to disenchantment through the tough process of planning. The circus wagons and the tent are sold in order to provide own funds for the construction of the circus. Suddenly Travados is floating in a vacuum. The winter program must take place in the town hall. Nevertheless: In 2001 the decision was made to start construction. The dredging starts in April. The base plate will be ready on May 30th. After three and a half years of planning and preparation, the circus gets a permanent building. The topping-out ceremony will take place on July 27th. In December Travados plays for the first time in the circus building. 2002 is the official opening

There is space for 500 spectators around the arena. “The construction was exactly the right decision,” says Travados director Hartmut Hoffmeister. It cost around one million euros. Now it is played 52 weeks a year. And not just by acrobats and artists. Up until two years ago the DGB invited to its May rally in the building, the criminals, the opening event of Mord am Hellweg, is celebrated there every two years. And on the coming Whit Monday, the Protestant church will celebrate its central baptism festival in Unna in the circus. The only permanent circus building next to Krone in Munich has proven itself, says Hoffmeister.
